Civil Society Days of the GFMD – Quito 2020

February 1, 2020

A more interactive and multi-stakeholder GFMD summit

The 12th  GFMD — the Global Forum on Migration and Development — took place in Quito, Ecuador from 21 – 24 January 2020. That year, for the first time in history, all the GFMD meetings took place in the same venue. This means that all the GFMD mechanisms: the governments, Civil Society Day (CSD), the Business Mechanism, and the new Mayors Mechanism, had more opportunities for interaction and exchange with other stakeholders throughout the summit, including during the Common Space – a day of interactive meetings with all the GFMD mechanisms – where civil society was able to present its common messages developed during the CSD. A special session at the end of the programme allowed all stakeholders to engage in voluntary dialogue on the implementation of the Global Compact for Migration (GCM).

The theme of the GFMD CSD was “Sustainable approaches to human mobility: Upholding rights, strengthening state agency, and advancing development through partnerships and collective action”.

Civil society recommendations

See civil society recommendations here, with a dearth of references to gender despite WIMN efforts! WIMN had prepared several briefing documents, shared among civil society and governmental participants. Paola Cyment led WIMN’s delegation.
