On December 10, we celebrated the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which grounds our work for the rights of women in migration and all people.  As we approach the end of 2023 with a mix of emotions amidst the swirl of world events, WIMN shares our greetings and best wishes to our friends, communities and families for health, happiness, peace and justice.

This has been a “pivotal” year for WIMN – one in which we have strengthened foundations of the organization – and we look forward to even more advances in the coming year. We hope you can support our efforts with an end-of-the-year donation, of any amount!

This year WIMN incorporated as a nonprofit organization and gained 501 c 3 tax exempt status in the U.S., a decade after our founding in 2012. We expanded to 21 organizational members and held our first membership assembly in early November.  We will complete our  first-ever elections to expand our Board of Directors this week.

We are prioritizing outreach and membership in diverse regions and with grassroots-based groups as part of a long-term plan to build an organization built for the long haul, working towards  our vision of a more just future. We are making progress in addressing language justice – so important in building movement, creating equitable spaces and access where language is not a barrier and where people speaking in different languages can interact on equal terms.

Our agenda has been full and engaging:

  • Our advocacy at the UN includes working in the UN Network on Migration’s Gender Workstream which, together with the Anti-Racism Workstream, issued an Anti-Discrimination Advocacy Tool. We contributed to the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights of Migrants Report on the labor and human rights of migrants.  On the five year anniversary of the Global Compact for Migration, when WIMN and Oxfam International launched the Marrakech Women’s Manifesto, we continue to actively monitor implementation of the Compact.
  • In October WIMN issued a statement for International Care & Support Day, calling attention to the conditions of care workers, many of whom are migrants, and precarious working situations in the care economy.
  • We’re engaging in preparations with civil society partners towards the Global Forum on Migration and Development, to be held in Geneva in January 2024, involving delegations from several WIMN members.

See our new website for a fuller picture of our activities!

We’re grateful for many partnerships with members and allies working at local, regional and global levels for the rights of women in migration – we truly value the collaboration and shared vision.

Thank you for your commitment to the rights of women in migration and the global work of WIMN.  Please support this work with a donation and let others know about WIMN!

In solidarity and on behalf of our members and secretariat,

WIMN’s Board of Directors —

Carol Barton, Carolina Gottardo, Helena Olea, and Michele Levoy
