WIMN Leads Global Gathering in Bangkok: Feminist Forum on Migration and Displacement Brings Advocates from 35+ Countries

PRESS RELEASE

November 27, 2024

Over 130 migrant and feminist organizers from more than 35 countries will convene in Bangkok for the Feminist Forum on Migration and Displacement (FFMD), taking place from November 30 to December 1. Hosted by the Women in Migration Network (WIMN), in partnership with leading organizations in the migration and feminist advocacy space, the FFMD will create a powerful platform to address the critical issues impacting migration today.

The FFMD takes place ahead of the 15th Association for Women’s Rights in Development (AWID) International Forum, scheduled for December 2-5 in Bangkok. As part of the AWID Forum, WIMN will also host a workshop, “Building Together: Intersectional Feminist Migration Policy,” reflecting its ongoing commitment to feminist migration advocacy (Tuesday, Dec. 3 at 16:15)

WIMN’s feminist advocacy on migration policy traces its roots to the 2012 AWID Forum in Istanbul, where the group first emerged as the Women and Global Migration Working Group.

The Forum will explore ways to reshape migration policy by centering feminist principles and challenging systemic injustices, such as exploitation, violence, racism, and criminalization. As organizers emphasize: “We aim to build shared analysis and collaboration with feminists across sectors and regions, creating pathways to inclusion, justice, peace, and ecological sustainability while exposing and rejecting false solutions.”

Discussions will also focus on the root causes of forced migration, including economic inequality, militarization, climate change, and authoritarian regimes. Organizers have spotlighted an alarming rise in anti-immigrant policies, border militarization, migrant criminalization, and xenophobia worldwide.

The FFMD is committed to accessibility and inclusion, offering interpretation and translation in six languages to ensure equitable participation. Organizers describe the Forum as “one step in an ongoing process to strengthen ties among women in migration, build cross-sectoral alliances and fortify feminist movements – contributing to a long-term strategy for action.”

Co-organizers include Global Alliance Against Trafficking in Women (GAATW); International Domestic Workers Federation (IDWF); International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC); Migrant-Rights.org (GCC region); Solidarity Center; Trade Collective (South Africa); Unitarian Universalist Service Committee; and Wo-Mi Women Migrants (Denmark).

The Feminist Forum on Migration and Displacement is made possible through the generous support of AWID; Freedom Fund; Fund for Global Human Rights; Gender + Migration Hub/International Migration Research Centre/Wilfred Laurier University; GIZ: German Corporation for International Cooperation; Humanity United; International Domestic Workers Federation; MADRE; Minderoo Foundation/Walk Free; Porticus; Robert Bosch Stiftung; Solidarity Center; UN Women; Unitarian Universalist Service Committee; and Women’s Fund Asia.
