Voices from the Frontlines: Africa — Kenyan women resist displacement

In May 2025, WIMN’s fourth and final dialogue focused on the Mathare settlement in Nairobi, where women have experienced displacement and the loss of livelihoods. They have led the resistance to the effects of climate change, including devastating floods.

The dialogue is captured in the graphic posters below, available as PDFs in English, French, Spanish and Swahili. Supplemental materials can be found here.

WIMN organized this series to expand and deepen the understanding of our members and allies of climate change, environmental degradation, and the implications for displacement and migration. The process is also contributing to WIMN’s initiative to shape an intersectional, feminist migration policy.

The first dialogue was held in November 2023: Climate, Gender and Migration: Realities and Feminist Responses. Followed by the three case studies from Latin America, Asia and Africa, all viewed on this page.

The graphic summary from the dialogue is available in four languages. Just click on the image to read and download.
