Voices from the frontlines: Kenyan women fight displacement (Email)

August 10, 2025

The impact of flooding in the Mathare North settlement (Nairobi) and strategies of resistance is WIMN’s fourth and final cross-sectoral dialogue focused on the intersection of climate change, gender, and migration. The dialogue was organised in May, 2025 in collaboration with Amka Africa, Domestic Workers Advocacy Network, Green Africa Youth Organization and Lighthouse Partnerships.

Milka Wahu initiated the dialogue by describing the general context for the impact of climate change, including the particular consequences of flooding. Bilasio Wandera from Kariobangi Paralegal Network, along with activists from the community, Dorcas Kawira Gitau and Irene Kalondu Ligaka, shared their own experiences and the demands advocated by the community.

We are thrilled to share a graphic summary capturing the highlights from the Mathare settlement case. The key information for the summary comes from Amka Africa, Kariobangi Paralegal Network and the the 2024 Kenya Red Cross flood operations report.
